Innovation & Research

Advancing the frontier of gas detection technology

Interlink Electronics has a multi-decade history of gas sensing innovation — from printed electrochemical sensors developed under NSF SBIR grants to nanotechnology-based sensor platforms acquired through the Transducer Technology merger. These innovations drive the next generation of miniature, low-power, and application-specific gas detection instruments.

SPEC Printed Electrochemical Sensors

A new generation of toxic gas sensors integrating amperometric gas sensing with screen-printed electronics — miniature, microwatt-power, and matching conventional sensor performance.

Developed between 2012 and 2015 as the subject of an NSF SBIR grant, SPEC (Screen Printed Electrochemical) sensors represent a breakthrough in gas detection technology. By integrating amperometric gas sensing with printed electronics fabrication, these sensors can be manufactured in miniature sizes, require only microwatts of power, and match or surpass conventional amperometric sensor performance. The screen-printed manufacturing process enables flexible, near-paper-thin sensors at lower cost than traditional methods. SPEC sensors are designed for residential and industrial CO detection, wireless monitoring OEM systems, smartphone integration, personal health monitoring, medical breath analysis diagnostics, and IoT air quality networks.

SPEC Printed Electrochemical Sensors

  • Portable point-of-use water decontamination
  • Compact micro-reactor design
  • Emergency and humanitarian water treatment applications
  • Consumer point-of-use purification potential

Nanotechnology-Based Gas Sensors

Ultra-compact sensors from the Transducer Technology Inc. (TTI) merger — 0.57-inch footprint, under 2 grams, with sub-30-second response times.

Acquired through the 2007 merger with Transducer Technology, Inc. (TTI), KWJ's nanotechnology-based sensor line leverages advanced nanomaterials and microfabrication techniques to produce the industry's most compact electrochemical gas sensors. The 3ET T-Series sensors feature a 0.57-inch square footprint, weigh under 2 grams, and achieve T90 response times under 30 seconds. Available for CO (3ET1CO1500) and H2S (3ET1H2S100), these sensors are commercially available at TRL 9 and enable next-generation miniature wearable and IoT gas detection instruments.
